The Roundhay Environmental Action Project was established by local residents, concerned about their carbon footprint and wanting to develop a greener lifestyle.

Our first initiative is the Oakwood Farmers Market+, and we hope to set up further projects, enabling local people to live more sustainably.

Stallholder Interview

This month we talked Bryn and Vicky at B Whiteleys about their sustainable farming practices. We ask them about their farming ethos, about their growing practices and how they are helping to bring about change. Click here to read the interview.


Getting down to business

A REAP action meeting was held on September 10th. The aim of the meeting was to take REAP forward and discuss plans for future projects. There are now four project groups within REAP, that have developed from the seven original themes.

The four groups are:

  1. Energy research and solutions - Ideas include a library of equipment and resources, energy monitoring groups, and using postgraduate students to help assess energy efficency in Roundhay homes.

  2. Transportation - The starting point for this group is an audit of current initatives living to participation in a Living Streets Project (a national initative).

  3. Education and inspiration - Work is ongoing - learning from local construction initatives, setting up a local environmental disscussion group, along the lines of Cafe Scientifique to debate issues of local&national concern.

  4. Composting and gardens - Planning to start a community gardening club to look at sharing gardens, involving both older and younger people, and examining ideas such as urban farming.

The next step will be for the four groups to begin thinking about putting their projects into action, and a follow up meeting will be held on the 4th December to discuss how well developed the projects have become, and if they are ready to be implemented.
