Welcome

Roundhay Environmental Action Project (REAP)

REAP was established by local residents, concerned about their carbon footprint and wanting to develop a greener lifestyle. Our first initiative was the Oakwood Farmers Market+ which now attracts an estimated 300 vistitors who come to buy fresh, local, and sustainable produce - all which is produced within 50 miles of the Leeds area. We are now working on more projects, enabling local people to live more sustainably.

If you would like to find out more or become a member please contact us. We are keen to find out what other projects and initiatives people in Roundhay feel would benefit our planet and community.

Look out for REAP news in Roundhay Today!

REAP in 2009

The Roundhay Environmental Action Project (REAP) continues to promote practical local action on climate change and the environment. It is now over a year since REAP was set up (the first birthday of the Farmers Market+ is in March!!) Activity is underway regarding Reducing energy use; Transport; Education; Gardening and Composting.

  1. Energy research and solutions - An Energy Library lending out equipment and resources is now available via the Farmer's Market+. The group are currently working in partnership with the Energy Saving Trust and Kirklees Energy Services to create a 'low-carbon Roundhay'.Other initatives the group are looking into include energy monitoring groups, and using postgraduate students to help assess energy efficency in Roundhay homes.

  2. Transportation - The starting point for this group is an audit of current initatives living to participation in a Living Streets Project (a national initative).

  3. Education and inspiration - Work is ongoing - learning from local construction initatives, setting up a local environmental disscussion group, along the lines of Cafe Scientifique to debate issues of local&national concern.

  4. Composting and gardens - Planning to start a community gardening club to look at sharing gardens, involving both older and younger people, and examining ideas such as urban farming. Click here to download a questionnaire.

These are all excellent local initiatives but, as the urgency of the situation on climate change increases, we are aware that the opportunity time for making a difference is slipping away. The Trustees of REAP will be reviewing activity and progress in late March. We would welcome your views on how, as a local group, we can contribute more effectively to dealing with a national and global crisis. If you want to find out more, or wish to join any of the groups highlighted above, just email:info@roundhayaction.org.uk
